CLASS UPDATES

* If you did not turn in your response for A Better World in Second Life?, please email it to me if you want feedback (hint: you want feedback) or bring it to class on Thursday.

* I will be going over the attendance this weekend. If you have excused absences for which you have not provided documentation, please bring it ASAP.

* If you have not taken advantage of the extra credit opportunity with the writing tutor and would like to, please email me.

* We are in the unit on "Convergence & TV" and "Children/Youth & Convergence"; when Prof. Aristimuno returns on Oct. 30, you will begin with the "Movies & Convergence" unit.

CONTRACTIONS

HOW TO USE QUOTES:
* INTRODUCE SPEAKER
* CITE! Henry Jenkins says, “Blah dee Blah” (Jenkins 45).
* ANALYZE (why did you use this quote? How does it support your argument?)

PASSIVE VOICE
NOT “These goals were achieved by web designers in the 1990s” (passive voice)
BUT
“Web designers in the 1990s achieved these goals” (active voice – subject first! WHO is doing it?)

more examples of passive voice:
NOT The internet is used by teens.
YES - Teens use the internet

NOT Sites were made by producers and consumed by users.
YES - Producers made sites for users to consume.

PARALLEL STRUCTURE
The components of a list must match grammatically.

NOT Major companies are always competing for our attention, market to children, and strategy meetings.

YES - Major companies are always competing for our attention, marketing to children, and strategizing.

NOT I enjoy a nice cup of tea, running a mile and to listen to music.

YES I enjoy a nice cup of tea, a mile-long run, and music listening sessions (all nouns) OR I enjoying sipping a nice cup of tea, running and mile and listening to music (all gerund verbs).

For those of you who missed class on Thursday, we went over the exam. Below is the grading breakdown. My office hours are by appointment on Mondays before class, so please let me know if you have any questions or would like to meet.

(IN CLASS) PART I = 32 PTS TOTAL

Key Terms
2pts each x 8 = 16 pts

CHART = 8 pts

ROSA UNIVERSITARIA STORY = 8 PTS
(1 pt for correct use, one for definition)


(TAKE HOME) PART 2 = 68 PTS

Q1 EVOLUTION OF INTERNET = 22 PTS
5 pts for each sub question plus 2 pts for writing

Q2 CONVERGENCE = 24 PTS
7 for first sub question, 5 pts for each of other 3 sub questions plus 2 pts for writing

Q3 TEENS = 22 PTS
5 pts for each sub question plus 2 pts for writing

Please be sure to take advantage of the extra credit opportunity. If you take your take home portion to the writing tutor at Rutgers and bring it back to me to show me the markings, I will give you 10 more points on the exam.  Have the tutoring center stamp your paper or give you an appointment slip.
